Dissident Algerian Women Filmmakers: Documentaries, War/s and Memories
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article presents different documentaries made by Algerian women filmmakers that deal with the subject of the war and women’s participation before, during and after the conflict. We have selected La Nouba des femmes du mont Chenoua (Assia Djebar, 1977), La Moitié du ciel d’Allah (Djamila Sahraoui, 1995), Lettre à ma soeur (Habiba Djahnine, 2006) and Loubia Hamra (Narimane Mari, 2013), among others, for highlighting the situation of Algerian women at the time they were made and for addressing, with a very different aesthetic and technical composition, the history of Algeria at two key moments: the War of Independence (1954-1962) and the Civil War (1991-2002). These filmmakers are dissident in the way they choose to shoot stories that disagree with the national narrative created after colonization and in the way they emphasize the role of women in shaping Algerian identity.
