Resumen

En el siglo XIX, tanto los británicos como los reformistas indios otorgaron un papel destacado a la educación femenina en la India, aunque ni para unos ni para los otros, esta educación debía servir para formar a profesionales que ejercieran su trabajo en la esfera pública. Sin embargo, desde mitad del siglo XX, las aulas de las universidades técnicas abrieron sus puertas a un selecto número de mujeres que pasarían a convertirse en la primera generación de mujeres arquitectas en el país y que allanarían el camino a las arquitectas más jóvenes. En la actualidad, muchas de estas profesionales formadas dentro y fuera de la India están combinando las maneras de hacer y de entender la construcción, aplicándolos a la conservación, restauración y proyección de edificios públicos y privados para que éstos sean más sostenibles y respeten el medio ambiente.

Abstract

In the nineteenth century, British and Indian reformers stressed the role of the education of women in India. However, none of them thought of education in terms of training female professionals to work in the public sphere. Nonetheless, in the middle of the twentieth century, technical universities started opening their doors to an elite group of women who became the first generation of women architects in India and thereby blazed the trail for future generations of female architects. Nowadays, many of these professionals trained in India and abroad are combining new ways of undertaking and understanding construction, and applying them to the conservation, rehabilitation and projection of public and private buildings, thereby making them more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
