Estrategias para la subtitulación de expresiones idiomáticas y proverbios egipcios en inglés

Algunas plataformas, como Netflix, ofrecen subtítulos de distintas obras y películas en varios idiomas, entre ellos el árabe y el inglés. En este estudio, los investigadores analizan las estrategias utilizadas para superar los retos a los que se enfrentan los subtituladores a la hora de traducir expresiones idiomáticas y proverbios egipcios al inglés. Se compiló desde cero un corpus paralelo de cuatro películas, a saber, تيتا رهيبة La abuela, عسل أسود Bittersweet, الباشا تلميذ The Student cop, y عمارة يعقوبيان Yacoubian Building. Las expresiones idiomáticas y los proverbios se identificaron y analizaron según las taxonomías de Baker (Baker, 1992). La estrategia de traducción más utilizada para traducir proverbios fue la "paráfrasis". Al traducir expresiones idiomáticas, los subtituladores recurrieron sobre todo a la estrategia de "traducir parafraseando utilizando palabras no relacionadas para tratar la expresión no equivalente". En algunos casos se detectaron "errores de traducción", muy probablemente debidos a la falta de conocimiento de la cultura de destino y a no encontrar equivalentes apropiados. En ocasiones, los subtituladores recurrieron a la traducción literal, lo que distorsionó el significado y dio lugar a traducciones poco naturales. Los resultados también revelaron que algunas expresiones que se utilizaban repetidamente en las películas se traducían de forma diferente según el contexto. Este estudio puede ser beneficioso para traductores y estudiantes de traducción, especialmente para aquellos interesados en subtitular películas y traducir proverbios y expresiones idiomáticas.
