Abstract

Theatrical productions by suffragettes played a crucial role in bringing attention to the social and political injustices faced by women in the early 20th century. Despite the significant impact of this form of literature on society and its role in shaping history, most of these texts have not been translated into Spanish, making them inaccessible to the public in Spain. This paper aims to develop a method for recovering these texts, making them available to the public, and sparking the interest of researchers further to explore the reasons behind this lack of translation and address the invisibility of key texts written by women.

Author Biographies

Elisabet Pérez Heredia, Universidad de Valencia

Elisabet Pérez-Heredia holds a BA in Modern Languages and Literatures, with a major in German and a minor in English, from Universitat de València (2019). At the same university she also studied a master’s degree in Creative and Humanistic Translation (2023), focusing on literary translation. She is currently working on her doctoral thesis, while enrolled in the PhD programme in Language, Literature, Culture and its Applications at Universitat de València, under the supervision of Dr. Gora Zaragoza-Ninet. Her main areas of research are feminist translation and the translation of anglophone women authors from the first half of the 20th century.

Gora Zaragoza-Ninet, Universitat de València

Gora Zaragoza-Ninet is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and German at Universitat de València (Spain). Her research focuses on feminist translation, the relationship between translation and censorship, and the translation and reception of 20th-century English female novelists. She has presented at national and international conferences and published books, book chapters, and articles in indexed journals. She has also been a visiting scholar at leading international research universities and has coordinated research projects in the fields of gender, translation, and censorship.
