Abstract

This paper aims to relate the demographic evolution to that of households in order to analyse the process of social reproduction inherent in existing production relationships in an l8th century rural community. The results show that, in the case of Culla during the period 1721-58, demographic growth led to an increase not only in the number of houses but also in the number of members of each household. This is due to the fact that rigid conditions of access to land exploitation had a correlative effect on the flexibility of the production organization by families.
