Abstract

Post mortem inventories appear as a potential source for the calculation of the maximum size of the nuclear family, since these documents often mention the number of children. From the study of ninety-seven post mortem inventories in Castellón de la Plana recorded between 1517 and 1698, we deduce that the number of children in the nuclear family increased during this period by 0.5, the average maximum size being approximately 2.0 children in the 16th century and reaching a maximum of 2.5 children at the end of the 17th century.
