Abstract

Based on two peculiar paintings belonging to the kind called “Vanitas” (still/life) attributed to the painter J. de Cieza and kept in Huesca cathedral since the end of the 17 th. century, the discourse tries to understand the way in wich the new astronomical Science reached a highly problematical representation in the Spanish Counter-Reformist circles. It is so revealed that this “mise-en-scien” of astronomers and astronomy itself won always carried out inside the framework of a moralising rhetoric, trying to relativize scientific discoveries by opposing them to the saving mystery of divine creation.
