Abstract

The identification of the publicani, devoted to the collection of the Republican taxes, with the members of the exclusive Roman class of the equites, carne to pro vide a difficult equivalence between the economic and social meanings wihch both denominations represent. un this article we try to give reasonings basad on definitions in use, to pro vide the social origin of those powerful leaders of th societates publicanorum, without implying more than one of the several activities they were devoted.
