Abstract

During the first half of XX century, fishing activity experienced an important growth in Vinaròs, Benicarló and Peñíscola, with an increase in the number of boats and crew. But, the importance of the fishing decreased from the middle of the century, when there was a prowth of industrial and tertiary activities related to the tourism. Recenthy, fishermen retirement has also contributed to the decline of the activity. Nevertheless, these three municipalities of El Maestrat have nearly half of the fleet and fishermen in Castelló, and they generate 44% of the global production. Nowadays, the sector is characterised by relatively ald fleet and fishermen, with a predominance of boats of lees than 20 tons capacity.
