Abstract

The workers' schools and libraries established in Sinaloa at the end of the 19th century and
beginning of the 20th century were significant spaces in the dynamics of social and cultural
life in the main urban centers of the state. These places became a key space in the process
of modernization and social integration of broad social sectors in the emerging populations.
In order to investigate the characteristics of the process of creation of libraries and workers'

schools as well as the expansion of the reading public in new societies of recent
reconfiguration, this article aims to analyze the initiatives of creation of schools and
libraries by workers' and mutual associations and their role during the process of shaping a
civic and political culture in the sectors of workers and artisans in Sinaloa.
