The Linguistic Landscape of Touristification: The Case of Cádiz
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper examines the linguistic landscape of the historic center of Cádiz in relation to the processes of touristification that are transforming the city. Based on a visual corpus composed of photographs taken by the authors, the paper studies various manifestations that express forms of resistance against the commodification of urban space. The study adopts a critical approach to the linguistic landscape as a tool for observing tensions between power, identity, and the use of public space. It demonstrates that the messages analyzed, far from being anecdotal or merely decorative, constitute social discourses that denounce the loss of housing, the transformation of historic neighborhoods, and the displacement of local residents. The paper concludes that the linguistic landscape of Cádiz becomes a site of symbolic struggle where meanings of belonging are negotiated and the logics of global tourism are challenged, thus revealing the collective sentiment of a citizenry defending its right to the city.
