Empathy patterns in managing conflicts between parents and children. Chinese and Spanish perspectives
Main Article Content
Abstract
Empathy plays an important role in social interactions and tends to be shaped by cultural codes. It is likely that in response to identical situations, empathetic reactions will reveal specific cultural patterns, differing across both cognitive and affective dimensions. This study recruited Chinese and Spanish participants (N=20) and situated them in scenarios to induce empathy (family conflicts). The oral narratives were analyzed to identify cultural patterns in empathy. The results show similarities and cultural differences between Chinese and Spanish participants, both in the adoption of perspectives in the conflict story and in the strategies chosen to manage an alternative story.
