Resumo

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the plantation economy took off in Cuba. To consolidate its expansion, the sugar industry needed land and, in the process of demanding it, it came into dispute over the lands devoted to agriculture and small-scale production, and also the land belonging to the Crown -Realengos-. This paper examines the consequences of the growth and expansion of commercial agriculture in Havana, according to its impact on subsistence farming and tobacco fields.
