Saint Luke as a painter: Virgin’s portraitist

Main Article Content

María Montesinos Castañeda

Abstract

Saint Luke used to be depicted with a bull, which is his main identifying attribute. However, iconoclast movements arose some legends that consider Saint Luke as a painter, which impacted his visuality. From these points, the objective is to explain the origin of the iconographic type of Saint Luke as a painter by relating written and visual sources and pointing out differences in the kind of Saint Luke portraits of the Virgin Mary.
