Les construccions d'alternança complementària són emparellaments de forma i significat que s'utilitzen per vincular dos estats de coses diferents de manera que el segon element se suma al primer basant-se en el judici subjectiu del parlant, com en "No puc permetre'm un cotxe de luxe, i molt menys un jet privat". Altres construccions d'aquesta família inclouen connectors com much less, never mind i to say nothing of (Iza Erviti, 2015). Cadascuna d' aquestes configuracions exhibeix una varietat de propietats de significat distintives dins l' espectre de l'alternança complementària. Aquest estudi sosté que els diversos significats atribuïts a aquestes construccions són el resultat de l' activació de diferents operacions cognitives. Per donar suport a aquesta afirmació, aquest article presenta un estudi exhaustiu de la construcció X Never Mind Y, revelant com les diferents operacions cognitives subjacents afecten la naturalesa de les connexions intratextuals que crea i els efectes de significat que transmet. A més, aquest article aclareix per què aquesta construcció és aplicable en una àmplia varietat de contextos. Aquestes troballes donen suport a una classificació novedosa de les construccions d'alternança complementària basada en les operacions cognitives involucrades en les construccions.
