Tǔ (land) and yáng (ocean): a metaphorical dichotomy in China's modernization process

Abstract
From the middle of the 19th century, when China came into intense contact with the West, the geographical concepts tǔ (land or telluric) and yáng (ocean or maritime) began to acquire a series of sociocultural connotations that turned them into a metaphorical construction of transcendental significance. The present work aims to study, from the perspective of Cultural Rhetoric, the interactive relationships between the discourses generated around the tǔ-yáng opposition and the profound changes produced in the modernization process of China. Tǔ and yáng, which represent completely different identities, attitudes, lifestyles, ideologies and values, have left a deep imprint on the language, thought and culture of Chinese society. In general terms, yáng is associated with the foreign, the modern and the attractive, while tǔ refers to the indigenous, the backward and the rustic. However, both concepts undergo semantic and evaluative changes in different social contexts, which testifies to the mutual influences between discourse and power, as well as the ups and downs in relations between China and the West.
