El judeo-espanyol i la cultura sefardita a Tessalònica. Perspectives de la situació actual i dels esforços per a la revitalització de l'idioma

Abstract

The present article gives an overview of the historical and current state of Sephardic culture in general, and of the Judeo-Spanish language in the city of Thessaloniki. The article is based on an interview with Jack Benmayor, a professor of Judeo-Spanish at Aristotle University. The Sephardic community of Thessaloniki is presented as a group actively participating in efforts to maintain and strengthen the local Sephardic culture. Regarding the revitalization of the Judeo-Spanish language, current teaching activities are presented, and challenges for the continued presence of the language in the city of Thessaloniki are discussed.
