La natura a l’Erofili de Khortatsis: entre símbol i història

Abstract

Georgios Chortatsis’ Erofili is the first tragedy in Modern Greek. It was written shortly before the
year 1600, and is the most representative theatrical piece of the Cretan Renaissance. This article moves
beyond traditional interpretations of the work, which are centred on its philological aspects. Inspired by
ecocriticism, the article suggests a reading of the tragedy with a focus on nature. Its goal is to show that
nature in Erofili goes beyond symbolism: it is an expression of the human nature relationships in late
sixteenth century Crete.
