Abstract
The linguistic landscape of Cyprus has always been marked by extensive multilingualism, shaped by its historical, political, and cultural contexts. The Republic of Cyprus recognises two official languages: Greek and Turkish. Greek Cypriots acquire Cypriot Greek at home as their first language and learn Standard Modern Greek through schooling; similarly, Turkish Cypriots acquire Cypriot Turkish as their first language and learn Standard Turkish through schooling. Minority languages recognised by the Republic of Cyprus are Cypriot Arabic, Western Armenian, and Cypriot Sign language. A variety with no official recognition is Gurbetcha, spoken by Turkish Cypriot Roma. Finally, migration over the recent decades has further diversified island’s linguistic repertoire with languages such as Russian and Arabic.
