Abstract
Henry VIII obtained in 1521 the title of defender of the faith. Of Catholic origin, the title acquired in his reign Protestant character, in connection with the founding of the Church of England and was linked to his successors. For this reason, in the times of Mary Tudor, the title returned to its Catholic origin with more force if possible. In this text we go through the propagandistic use of the appellation «fidei defensor» in relation to the arts in a context of religious conflict, between Henry VIII and Mary Tudor. Her husband, Philip II, will continue using the English title in another ambit, that of the fight against the Turkish enemy.
