Östliches Kolorit und glühende Sonne. Orientalismus in der Deutschen Oper im 20. Jahrhundert am Beispiel von Richard Strauss’ „Salomé“

Abstract

The methods and categories of analysis of Orientalism,
postcolonial theory and structuralism are applied to the opera „Salomé“
of R. Strauss. A reading of the work is developed that fi nds two separate
but interrelated postulates, namely those of Western (cultural and
political) dominance as well as of male dominance.
