Resumen
This article analyses a pilota (Valencian ball) match in a trinquet (the pilota court). First, the ritual and the communitas are conceptualised according to Turner, after which this conceptualisation is used to describe a match in depth, with a focus on the anthropology of the bet. The bet is interpreted as a means of communication among the various roles played out in the trinquet: players, spectators, trinqueter and marxaors. The results show how a whole community within a subworld––the trinquet––is articulated through betting. Throughout the description of the match counter analogies are established with the world of sport, as well as with modernity. Finally, the cultural changes taking place in the evolution of Valencian ball are discussed and compared with the new relationships between the key agents in this activity.The article derives from an ethnography that led to in a PhD in 2017.
