Abstract

In recent decades, indicators have become an essential governance technology for policy development at all levels. In the case of rural areas, indicators are used to determine access to funding, to assess their development, to compare them with other areas, or to integrate them into broader political strategies. This paper presents a synthesis of the main approaches to the issue of governance by indicators (indicators as a technology of governance, social indicators) and their implications for rural areas (rural proofing). Likewise, different systems of international indicators (Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda) and local indicators (territorial indicators of Aragon, ISDT) are analysed in order to determine their thematic and methodological suitability for making visible, generating standards, drawing comparisons and involving communities in the analysis of their situation.
