Abstract

Gentrification in the Context of Risk Society: The Case of Barrio Italia in Santiago de Chile

Latinogentrification is the Latin American term for the gentrification process, associated with globalization and therefore, increasingly common in urban spaces. One of the most illustrative cases in Santiago de Chile is Barrio Italia, framed in a neoliberal context and with a marked process of stakeholder governance.

This essay analyzes the situation of gentrification in Barrio Italia, in the context of Ulrich Becks’ risk society theory and the eviction of its original neighbors, which contradicts the right to the city proposed by Henri Lefebvre.
