La dramaturga Sophie Treadwell ha pasado a la historia del teatro estadounidense como la autora de una de las primeras muestras de expresionismo sobre los escenarios de Broadway, Machinal. En esta obra se mezclaba un estilo innovador con una temática más o menos clásica (el asesinato dentro del núcleo familiar). Ninguna otra obra escrita por Treadwell disfrutó de la notoriedad lograda por Machinal. Un análisis de la producción teatral de esta autora nos permite ver cómo el resto de sus escritos responde casi en exclusiva a la estructura clásica de la obra realista; sin embargo, este tradicionalismo en la forma contrasta con una temática innovadora.

Abstract
Playwright Sophie Treadwell entered the history of American theatre as the author of Machinal, one of the first evidences of expressionist drama on Broadway stages. In this play Treadwell combined an innovative style with a rather classic theme (murder within the family). No other text written by Treadwell – neither play nor novel – enjoyed the same notoriety as Machinal. An analysis of the other plays written by this playwright will allow us to see how almost all the rest of her productions has the classic structure of realist drama; however, this traditionalism in form contrasts with a very innovative subject matter.
