The Lower East Side Tenement Museum narra historias de inmigrantes que en el Lower East Side de Manhattan comenzaron sus vidas de nuevo entre los siglos xix y xxi a través de la recreación de la que fue su trayectoria vital en apartamentos y negocios de familias reales en un edificio de viviendas histórico que albergó a más de 15.000 inmigrantes de clase trabajadora de más de 20 naciones mientras sirvió como vivienda. De esta manera el Museo Tenement conserva e interpreta la historia de la inmigración gracias a las experiencias personales de generaciones de recién llegados que se establecieron y construyeron sus vidas en este emblemático vecindario de inmigrantes de Estados Unidos; forja conexiones emocionales entre visitantes e inmigrantes pasados y presentes; y mejora el aprecio por el profundo papel que ha desempeñado y sigue desempeñando la inmigración en la configuración de la identidad nacional en evolución de los Estados Unidos.

ABSTRACT

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum tells the stories of immigrants, who started their lives anew on Manhattan’s Lower East Side between the 19th and 21st centuries, through the recreation of what was their life story in apartments and businesses of real families in historic tenement buildings who housed over 15,000 working class immigrants from over 20 nations while they served as residences. In this way, the Tenement Museum preserves and interprets the history of immigration through the personal experiences of the generations of newcomers who settled in and built lives on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, America’s iconic immigrant neighborhood; forges emotional connections between visitors and immigrants past and present; and enhances appreciation for the profound role immigration has played and continues to play in shaping America’s evolving national identity.
