Post-truth and destruction of the public sphere. An Arendtian perspective

Abstract
In 1967, in response to criticism of her reports on the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem, Hannah Arendt published an article on «Truth and Politics» in The New Yorker. Four years later, and after the leak of the Pentagon Papers, Hannah Arendt published an essay in The New York Review of Books called «Lying in Politics». This study takes these two essays as a starting point to determine the presence and appropriateness of the Arendtian thinking in the analysis of the post-truth phenomenon. Assuming a historical-hermeneutic methodology that is based on the review of primary and secondary sources, we analyze the term «defactualization» as a proto-concept of post-truth, even before the term post-truth existed. Hannah Arendt coined the term «defactualization» in «Lying in Politics» in order to describe the remoteness from reality. Building on this basis, this article examines three characteristics that we find not only in the core of Arendt’s thought, but also in the discussions and reflections on the current and future state of post-truth: the irrelevance of factual truth, the loss of faith in institutions and governments, and the destruction of the public realm, in Arendtian terms, a sphere of truly human discussion and truly human consensus.
