Modern democracies are not perfect. On the one hand, they are afflicted by well-known problems, such as corruption, nepotism, and populism. On the other hand, they are shaped by technologies, from printing to the web.

In recent years, scholars and technologists have begun to explore alternative ways to augment, modify, or improve democracy. These include theoretical and practical proposals based on the use of digital tools designed to inform citizens (open data, voting recommendation system), elicit online participation (e.g. participatory budgeting), or augment participation through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). These and other proposals aim to improve public participation; reduce the vulnerability of representative democratic systems; increase the accountability of politicians; or simply offer citizens greater control and scrutiny of political actions and decisions. We invite scholars and practitioners interested in the interface between Democracy and Artificial Intelligence to contribute to a special issue of Recerca. Recerca is an indexed peer-reviewed journal in Philosophy and the Social Sciences published by the Universitat Jaume I in Spain. The topic of this special issue, “Democracy in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” intends to look in depth at the possibilities, limits, and consequences of the digital transformation of democracy.

We are looking for contributions on theoretical/practical and/or hermeneutic/critical studies of both proposed democratic models based on Artificial Intelligence and the current application and use of Artificial Intelligence in politics to develop systems and societies. Associated topics include:

1. Democracy and Artificial Intelligence
2. Democracy and Blockchain
